Martin has become best-loved for his ITV role in Doc Martin as grumpy GP Martin Ellingham, based in the quirky, fictitious Cornish fishing village of Portwenn.
The actor’s first big break was in the Eighties BBC sitcom No Place Like Home, but it was his role as lads’ lad Gary a decade later in the ITV sitcom Men Behaving Badly that turned him into a household name.
He’s since flirted with big screen roles in films like Staggered and Hunting Venus, which he also directed, as well as Shakespeare in Love alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes.
Martin remains a staple of primetime TV having appeared in a raft of ITV dramas including William and Mary, The Booze Cruise, A is for Acid, Goodbye Mr Chips, as well as working on the one-off show The Man Who Lost His Head and a third series of Doc Martin.
