First broadcast: 2002

Stars: James Wilby, Juliet Aubrey, Alan Bates and Eileen Atkins

Writer: Nigel Williams

The lowdown: James Wilby plays King George VI, aka 'Bertie', and Juliet Aubrey is Queen Elizabeth in this fictionalised account of the relationship between the monarch and his wife. It follows their first meeting, as the then Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, through to George’s death, taking in their marriage and succession to the throne along the way. The film also explores the rocky relationship between George and his father King George V, his life-long struggle to overcome his stammer and the abdication crisis - which saw the shy royal reluctantly thrust into the limelight after his brother King Edward VII renounced his position in order to marry twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson.

Memorable moments:  Star turns from the late Alan Bates as King George V and Dame Eileen Atkins as Queen Mary.

Trivia: Bertie and Elizabeth was commissioned especially for HM The Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002.
