Foyle's future

ITV has confirmed that following the success of the Foyle's War series, discussions have taken place with Foyle creator and writer Anthony Horowitz about keeping Foyle on our screens beyond April 2008.

Laura Mackie, Director of Drama at ITV said: "Foyle is an iconic character that viewers love. Although the latest series ended on VE day Europe would remain in turmoil for some time to come and Foyle's life and work could continue in many different ways.

“We are very hopeful that we can bring him back to our screens sometime in the future."

Foyle’s War
April 20
ITV1, 8pm

It’s May 1945 and the last six days of the war are playing out in Europe. The Germans are surrendering and victory is almost in the Allies’ grasp.

On the Home Front Hastings is preparing itself for VE Day.

For Foyle, it means retirement and hopefully the return of his son, Andrew, from the war. Sam faces a new and uncertain future. Milner has won a promotion at another police station down the coast and his wife has produced a new baby.

Foyle is enlisted as the police representative for the council’s Victory Day Celebrations Committee. Worried about a break down in public order, the council has collected the great and the good of the town to see how best to manage what is anticipated as the biggest street party of all time.

Foyle is surprised to see his old friend Major John Kiefer on the committee – there representing the American forces stationed in Hastings.

It’s been over two years since these two friends met and Foyle recognises that his friend has been dramatically changed by his wartime experiences. For Kiefer, who just wants to go home, the end of the war can’t come soon enough.

But when one of the committee members is murdered, no one is going anywhere.

All the evidence points to a fellow committee member being the guilty party and, in his quest to solve his final case, Foyle must dig into one of the dirtiest secrets of the war and uncover truths the Allies would rather remain hidden.

Julian Ovenden returns to the series as Foyle’s son Andrew, the fighter pilot back from the war to win back the love of his sweetheart, Sam (played by Honeysuckle Weeks). Anthony Howell stars as injured sergeant Paul Milner.

Broken Souls
Sunday 13 April
ITV1, 8pm

"War is tactical. War is strategic. War is murder."

In order to ease the boredom of the blackout, Foyle has taken up chess. His tutor is psychiatrist Dr Josef Novak, a Polish Jew who works at Sackville House in Hastings.

Sackville House has been requisitioned by the War Office for the rehabilitation of servicemen traumatised by war.

Novak’s family in Poland were rounded up and sent to a concentration camp by the Nazis while Novak was out of the country.

Unable to return home or help his family, Novak had no choice but to come to Britain as an exile.

When one of Dr Novak’s colleagues Julian Worth is found murdered, Foyle is called on to investigate.
There’s no shortage of suspects as it becomes quickly apparent that Worth was not a well-liked man.

Soon after the discovery of the body, Novak attempts suicide but is found just in time by Foyle and Milner.
