Ian Rankin slideshow

Before his writing career took off, Ian's previous jobs included swineherd, taxman and punk rocker. 

In 2002 Ian was awarded the Order of the British Empire in the Queen's Golden Jubilee birthday honours list.

Ian's most famous character is Inspector Rebus, brought to life for ITV by Ken Stott and previously John Hannah.

Claire Price took on the role of Rebus' talented subordinate, Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke, who first appeared in the novel The Black Book.

Rebus fans were distraught when, in February 2008, Ken Stott revealed that he was bringing his time as the gruff inspector to an end.
