Considered one of the most influential figures in the history of crime thriller literature, PD James was created Baroness James of Holland Park in 1991.

PD James' first novel was Cover Her Face, published in 1962. As with her later work it drew heavily on her experience working in the institutions of the civil service.

It was in her very first novel that Commander Adam Dalgliesh, poet and investigator, made his debut. He would go on to appear in 14 of her books.

Dalgliesh is an introspective detective, a quiet man who finds time for reflection in poetry. And like Inspector Morse, he's a big Jaguar fan.

Roy Marsden brought Adam Dalgliesh to life in his unforgettable performances in ITV adaptations including Original Sin and A Certain Justice. Martin Shaw would later take on the role for the BBC.

PD James' work has also been adapted for the big screen. Clive Owen starred in the acclaimed 2006 sci-fi thriller Children of Men.
