Val McDermid slideshow

Val was born in Kirkcaldy on the East Coast of Scotland and was the first student from a Scottish state school to be accepted by St Hilda's College, Oxford.

Val's Dr Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordan novels were adapted for ITV starring Robson Green and Hermione Norris.

When Hermione Norris left the show after series three, she was replaced by Simone Lahbib as Detective Inspector Alex Fielding.

The title of the series (and Val's original novel) is based on a line from Burnt Norton, a poem by TS Eliot.

Wire in the Blood, set in the fictional West Yorkshire town of Bradfield, has proved hugely popular and is currently in its fifth series.

Val's background as a journalist, reporting major criminal investigations including the Yorkshire Ripper and Moors murders, ensure her novels and adaptations are extremely accurate.
