Val was born in Kirkcaldy on the East Coast of Scotland and was the first student from a Scottish state school to be accepted by St Hilda's College, Oxford.

Wire in the Blood, set in the fictional West Yorkshire town of Bradfield, has proved hugely popular and is currently in its fifth series.
