The Dead of Jericho - series one

Morse and Lewis team up for the first time in this episode screened in January 1987. Lewis struggles to understand his new boss as they investigate the death of a woman found hanging in her home. It looks like suicide but Morse is convinced foul play is afoot.

Deceived by Flight - series three

Morse investigates when the annual match of the Claret's old boys' cricket 11 is brought to an abrupt end by the sudden death of a team member - and it seems that cricket was the last thing on their minds.

The club appears to be a cover for something much more sinister and Lewis dons a caretaker’s overalls and goes under cover. It is nearly his final assignment as the death toll mounts. This episode was written by Anthony Minghella and is Kevin Whately’s favourite from the entire Morse collection.

Masonic Mysteries - series four

Morse finds himself in the unusual position of being a prime suspect in a murder investigation when his lady friend Beryl Newsome is killed at a dress rehearsal. Lewis starts uncovering more incriminating evidence, and Morse becomes the target of direct attacks. Who is it that wants to get at Morse so badly?

Fat Chance - series five

Morse is called in to investigate the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a female deacon. St Saviour's College has announced plans to appoint Oxford's first female chaplain, and many conservative clerics are furious. However, Morse and Lewis find it hard to believe that such and issues could lead to murder.

Greeks Bearing Gifts - series five

When the chef at Lewis's favourite Greek restaurant is found murdered and a baby goes missing, Oxford's close-knit Greek community closes ranks. Matters aren't helped when Morse has a bad-tempered exchange with the shipping millionaire who owns the restaurant.

Second Time Around - series five

The suspicious death of a former deputy police commissioner brings Morse into reluctant contact with an old rival, Chief Inspector Dawson. Morse and Lewis, in uneasy tandem with Dawson, spot a link with the unsolved murder of a girl 18 years earlier.

Twilight of the Gods - series seven

Morse is called into action when a sniper opens fire on a procession of dignitaries at Oxford University. A world-famous opera singer is left seriously wounded, but was she the intended target?

The Way Through the Woods - one-off, 1995

A man suspected of being a multiple murderer is killed in prison while awaiting trial, leaving the disappearance of a fifth woman unsolved. In the missing woman's effects is a postcard of a Pre-Raphaelite painting, the background of which was painted in some woods near Oxford. Morse is assigned to a new murder investigation when what appears to be her body is found in the woods.

The Remorseful Day - final episode

After a year of failure, the Thames Valley Police's investigation into the murder of Yvonne Harrison in a Cotswold village sparks into life when new evidence arises. Morse, who has been off sick, is under doctor's orders to cut back on his drinking. But what exactly is the state of his health when he returns to service? And how will he react to Lewis heading the case?
