Denise was born in Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear, she first appeared on the West End stage in Yakety-Yak with the McGann brothers at the Astoria Theatre in 1983. She joined Live Theatre, Newcastle where she starred in many productions later meeting Tim Healy, whom she married in 1988.
Denise has had many stage successes including the very successful role of “Marie Hoff” in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice at the Royal Exchange, Manchester for which she won the Manchester Evening News ‘Best Actress’ Award.
Her first television part was in Barriers for Yorkshire/Tyne Tees in 1981. She then went on to appear in Auf Wiedersehen Pet, as “Frances” in Spender and “Marsha Stubbs” in three series of Soldier, Soldier alongside Robson Green.
In 1997 Denise created the role of “Natalie Horrocks” in Coronation Street, which in turn led to her becoming the landlady of the Rovers Return and a household name. Since then she has starred in many TV series including Born And Bread, Holby City, Where The Heart Is, and Down To Earth. Currently she can be seen starring as 'Steff Haydock' in the third series of the popular BBC drama "Waterloo Road"
Denise is also a keen presenter, among her credits are The Real DIY Show with Denise Welch and This Morning. Currently Denise features as one of Loose Women's regulars.
