Rolf Harris St Ives 4x3Play

St Ives, Cornwall

Published: Thursday, 23 August 2007, 12:02PM

Artist and television presenter Rolf Harris travels to Cornwall to reveal his favourite view.

The journey to the coast takes in Cornwall’s magnificent scenery, as the cliffs dotted with the ruins of old tin mines and headlands give way to the turquoise sea, sub-tropical gardens and golden beaches.

And while Land's End, standing at the very tip of England, possesses a near-mystical quality, it is the picturesque seaside town of St Ives - where life still centres on the granite harbour and silky sands - that holds ultimate appeal for Rolf.

We discover how the inviting landscape and cobbled streets of this Cornish fishing port, often bathed in a wondrous light, have attracted countless painters to the area – and meet one of the artists in residence.

Rolf also visits the surfing haven of Porthmeor Beach to indulge in a spot of sand painting before heading out to sea with a local fisherman to catch some Mackerel.

And it’s these magical qualities of the harbour and the towns many beaches that, despite numerous visits, Rolf never bores of.

"At the edge of the harbour, ... wonderful white sand ... higgledy piggledy different coloured buildings in absolutely impossible disarray, so when you try to paint them ... to make order out of this chaos, you can't do it! It's just lovely and, when it's lit by the sun with the gorgeous darker blue of the sea beyond it, it's like a glittering diamond."
