Jack talks about the highs and lows of mentoring the group in Adrenaline Junkie 3...
What were you most worried about before the trip began?
How to lead people. It was such a daunting task and I'd never done anything like this before. It was strange to take five young adults under my wing and teach them how I coped with growing up, getting a sense of purpose in life and beating my demons. It’s something that I've not long come to terms with and to teach it to other people was quite a strange, but necessary task.
How did you bond with your fellow recruits?
We were not best friends and we didn’t hang out after filming - I wanted us to be separate. I wanted to let them know that I was not a friend. It may sound harsh, but I had to be this way, otherwise they didn’t put 100% effort in.
What was your highlight of the series?
Hawaii really stood out for me. It was the last shoot and it was summer there. We went surfing in the waves and although it was still really hard work we had lots of fun. Just before we got to Hawaii we had two weeks of filming left and I was not happy with the progression the recruits had made so far. I made them eat better and train harder and then when we got to Hawaii everything seemed to click into place and we really seemed to be getting somewhere.
What was your low point of the series?
The arguing really got me down, especially between the girls. It was really depressing. I'm not used to being in a negative environment. In the previous two series, Mike and Bean mentored me and they always created a fantastic vibe.
What have you learned about yourself from being a mentor?
I learned how to be a leader to some degree, although I wouldn’t say that I am now a bonafide teacher. I also learned the different ways and tactics to motivate people, as well as being responsible - not just for myself, but for others too.
Did your family have any words of advice or wisdom before your trip began?
My mum advised me not to kill myself by getting the kids to change too dramatically and I suppose she was right. There really was only so much I could do at the end of the day.
Would you change anything if you could do it all again?
Next time round I wouldn’t change too much, as I think everything happened for a reason. Although perhaps I would be more strict on their diet and exercise regime. I gained a lot and it was a lot of fun. I saw this group of people change and all of them now have clearly set goals in their lives.
If you were to lead a group of celebrity recruits, who would you choose?
A group of fun characters - perhaps people like Justin Timberlake and Jonathan Ross.
Why should we watch Adrenaline Junkie 3?
The audience will be able to relate to the show and the people in it, plus the challenges are amazing. I really do hope people enjoy the series and that they gain something positive from it.
