James Atkins, freesat’s resident HD expert, answers some of the more common queries about what High Definition TV is and how you can get it.
So why is HDTV better than normal TV?
The clarity and detail in high definition TV really is amazing. HD has up to five times as much detail as standard definition TV, so pictures are more life-like and many programmes will be available with stunning surround sound. To make the most of this, you’ll need a surround sound system connected to your freesat HD digital box.
What equipment do I need to receive ITV HD service?
ITV HD is only available through freesat, so you’ll need a satellite dish and either a TV with freesat HD built in (available soon), or a freesat HD digital box connected to an HD Ready TV. You’ll need to connect your HD digital box to your HD Ready TV with an HDMI cable (these cost from about £5).
What if I have an HD-ready TV? Will I automatically be able to watch HDTV?
HD Ready means that your TV is capable of displaying a HD picture, but it doesn’t guarantee you’ll be watching in HD. That's because you need to connect your HD Ready TV to an HD digital box that receives an HD service.
Can I use my existing set-top box?
No, to get ITV HD you’ll need a freesat digital box or TV with freesat HD built in - look for the freesat logo on the product. You’ll also need a satellite dish installed, which you can arrange with your freesat-approved retailer when you buy your freesat product.
If I already have a satellite dish, can I use that to receive freesat?
If there’s already a satellite dish on your home you may be able to use it to receive freesat but we recommend you check with your freesat retailer for details. If your existing satellite dish is still under warranty (typically 12 months) connecting a freesat digital box to your existing equipment may void the warranty on your satellite dish. You must also ensure that you fulfil any remaining contractual obligations you have with any other service providers.
Once I own a freesat dish and box, will it cost me extra to receive HD broadcasts?
No! That’s the beauty of freesat: no contract, no subscription, just a one-off payment. Once you have freesat, you’ll receive all the channels and services, including HD if you have a freesat HD digital box or TV with freesat HD built in.
How much will it cost me to install the dish?
A standard installation which most households will need should be around £80.
What do 720p and 1080i mean?
HD TV uses two different formats, 720p and 1080i, because they use similar amounts of bandwidth but offer programme makers the ability to choose how to capture their subject matter. 720p is ideal for recording fast action such as sport, while 1080i is better for programmes which benefit from showing an increased level of detail like natural history. Broadcasters are free to choose the format that best suits their mix of programmes.
Will I need to buy lots of expensive leads?
If you decide to buy a TV with freesat built in then you won’t need any leads. But if you choose to buy a freesat HD digital box, you will need to connect it to your HD-Ready TV with an HDMI cable. Some manufacturers include this in the box, but if not buying one shouldn’t set you back much more than a fiver (unless you want a really flash one).
What sort of shows will benefit most from the higher quality?
All shows will benefit from the higher quality HD offers. HD really brings pictures to life, so if you’re watching sport, you’ll feel closer to the action, natural history shows benefit from much greater detail and drama will keep you on the edge of your seat.
