The team visit Carshalton in Surrey making over the home of Lisa and Jamie Watkins. Jamie has no idea we’re here and that his lovely wife Lisa has been sneaking around behind his back organising this special surprise. The couple have had a run of bad luck over the last few years, including Lisa falling ill. Not only has Jamie been her rock but he has also had to put up with the dated décor of their three bedroom home which Lisa inherited from her parents. But all that is about to change as the 60 Minute Makeover team have come to the rescue.
Designer: Derek Taylor
The notorious Derek Taylor is in charge of today’s makeover and a transformation is sure to happen to this three bedroom house. Equipped with his expertise and his in-built design flare this house is not going to be recognisable in 60 Minutes time.
Lounge
This room was dark and dull. The old green carpet made the room feel cold and uncomfortable and although a good size the space wasn’t been used to its full potential.
Derek wanted to bring it bang up to date whilst keeping some of the room’s original features such as the beautiful coving. Derek introduced a lighter colour paint to the walls and used wallpaper to open up this room up. A cream coloured carpet replaces the dark green one which Lisa’s parents had laid. This instantly gives the room an airy feeling and finishes it off. The use of a corner sofa meant that every bit of space is now utilised. What a lovely room for hard working Jamie to relax in after a hard days work.
Dining room
This room had no identity and although it was a good size a miss match of furniture meant that it had no function. Derek wanted to create a stylish modern dining room and he did just that by using a spectacular crystal chandelier as the centre piece and working with the theme of reflection. A bespoke mirrored dining table doubled the impact of all those tranquil crystals and made the chandelier even more dramatic. Derek introduced light to this old dumping ground. Using natural colours and continuing the light carpet through from the living room this room was transformed into a luxurious dining space.
Main bedroom
Due to a lack of time and higher priorities this room was bland and boring. The fitted mirrored wardrobes were broken and had fallen off their rails. Derek’s vision was to create a place for Jamie and Lisa to relax in. Replacing the doors on the fitted wardrobes with some ultra sleek black ones and making a huge original floor-to-ceiling headboard made this room feel as if it is straight out of the orient. Derek’s use of lush fabrics and colours meant that Jamie and Lisa could close the door and get away from it all.
Oliver’s bedroom
Pirate mad Oliver’s room was sparse and unwelcoming. There was so much room but it wasn’t being used effectively. Using a mixture of wallpapers and a whole multitude of colours this room came to life. Made up of fun images, a pirate bed and a huge ceiling mounted sail; it became the perfect place for a young explorer. Each element of this room incorporates Oliver’s love of pirates and was unrecognisable from what it looked like just 60 minutes ago!
