This surprise makeover is for Emma Thomas who lives in a semi detached house in Great Dunmow with her husband Nigel and two children Anthony and Charmine. Nigel is surprising his wife Emma who has been the backbone of the family for the last few years. Emma was the full time carer for Nigel’s dad Philip after he suffered a two of strokes leaving him partially paralysed down one side of his body.
In 2000 Nigel and Emma sold their house in Braintree and moved to Philip’s house where Nigel built a bungalow at the end of the garden for Philip to live in. Emma continued to care for Philip until sadly he passed away in 2006. Nigel would like to put a smile back on Emma’s face by redecorating the house for her, so he gave the 60 minute makeover team a call.
The Designer: Julia Kendall
Today’s designer is Julia Kendall who wants to add colour and style to this house with themed bedrooms and a cool and cheerful living space.
Living room
The living room was a very plain room with magnolia walls and dark blue curtains. Julia has brought colour and texture to the room with some patterned plum wallpaper and acrylic plum panels on the walls. Building on this loud and colourful theme Julia has used a fish tank coffee table as the centre piece to the room which perfectly complements the light carpet and brown leather sofa.
Main bedroom
Lack of storage was the main problem with this room with Emma and Nigel using a wardrobe which was kept in Anthony’s room. The solution to this problem was some stylish fitted wardrobes up and over the entrance to the room giving them plenty of storage for their clothes. The walls have gone from lilac to a tailor-striped taupe wallpaper and washed oak furniture throughout.
Anthony’s room
Following in his fathers footsteps Anthony is a keen long distance runner so Julia has used this to influence a running themed room. Locker style wardrobes offer a practical and stylish storage solution along with a changing room style bench and a modern looking bed. The walls have changed from two shades of blue to beige throughout, with a feature wall using a running track image.
Charmine’s room
Sports obviously run in the family as Charmine is football crazy. He eats, drinks and now sleeps football with his new football themed room. The yellow walls have been replaced with a lovely blue colour and football image wallpaper on the side wall. For a bed Julia has chosen a football mid-sleeper which is a bed which doubles up as a football goal. Wow.
