The 60 Minute Makeover team pay a visit to Mary, a mother of 10 and grandmother of 17. She lives in a linked detached house in Smethwick.

Her daughter Barbara and her granddaughter Leanna want to surprise Mary with a makeover they feel she truly deserves. In the last year she has had a double hip replacement and before the operation she was walking with two sticks, whilst in copious amounts of pain, only managing a few steps at a time. The operations have transformed her life and a new home will be a dream come true.

The designer: Ann Hazell
Today’s designer is Ann Hazell. She plans to transform this house with a complete facelift including a brand new kitchen with new appliances, individual character and style for each room plus lots of interesting detail.

Living room
This room was tired with an over-the-top fireplace and overpowering yellow walls. Family is very important to Mary so Ann hung canvases of her old family photos on all the walls bringing a personal touch to the room. Ann used textured wallpaper - easy to wipe down with all those grandchildren to cater for - whilst bringing warmth to the room. Ann replaced the old fireplace with a stylish and modern one housing a further surprise within it…

Kitchen
This kitchen was falling apart and the cupboards were wonky and worn out. Ann transformed it with brand new beech wood cabinets and a granite work surface plus chrome appliances and a brilliant red fridge. This room changed beyond recognition.

Main bedroom
This room was uninspiring and the furniture layout didn’t utilize the space well enough. Ann brought in some fitted wardrobes which made the most of the high ceiling in terms of storage space and she covered an awkward alcove corner with a beautiful dressing screen. This room went from being drab and characterless to oozing with modern country glamour. The plain cream walls were transformed with a light pastel green and fabrics with fresh pastel pinks, chequered patterns and floral prints.

Guest bedroom
This room was also tired and plain with an old bed and no unity to the room. Ann turned this into a forties boudoir paradise with mirrored art deco furniture, silk and textured fabrics, bringing opulence and depth to the space.
