Staford-le-Hope Surprisee

Stanford-le-Hope

15/04/2008

Today the team are in Stanford-le-Hope, Essex. Sadie would like to surprise her mum, Sally.

Sally has had a traumatic couple of years with the death of her beloved father and also the separation from her husband. This three-bedroom home hasn’t been decorated for years and is in drastic need of a revamp.

The Designer: John Amabile
The flamboyant John has big ideas for Sadie’s house, and is going to take it from country cottage to country chic. Let’s just hope that Sally likes it….

Living Room & Dining Room
With its dark wood beams and chunky brick fireplace, this room was so far out of date, you would of thought you were in some sort of Tudor residence.

John wanted to bring it bang up to date, while still keeping the beams and stone fireplace. By painting the beams the same colour as the walls, the room immediately felt bigger. Due to the unusual layout of this room, John wanted to create the feeling of two separate spaces. He achieved this by using a vinyl floor in the dining area and a new cream carpet in the living room space.

The transformation was amazing. The whole room felt bigger, brighter and happier.

Kitchen
This kitchen was old, old, old and in dire need of a complete makeover. The old rotten units were replaced with new white Shaker-style units and doors, fitted by Top Marks 2. John also thought they deserved some new appliances, so in came the new washer dryer, cooker and a very stylish fridge-freezer. This room looked nothing like it had just 60 minutes previously.

Main Bedroom
This room was a mismatch of hand-me-downs and was no place for Sally to relax and unwind. Storage was a big problem too. John wanted to pull all of the room together. By using two large matching wardrobes on either side of the new bed the room looked balanced.

John, a master of soft furnishings, finished off the room with some gorgeous fabrics, cushions and a combination of voiles and a new roller blind.

Sadie's Bedroom
Sadie’s room was cold and uninviting and didn’t complement her love of travelling.

John wanted to create a place for Sadie to reflect on the great times she has had while travelling the world. Using an Indigo solid wood plank bed and a NoNo Living’s Buddha mural, the room was transformed into a far away Asian paradise.
