The 60 Minute Makeover visited Reddish, Stockport, to rescue Dean Hulme from DIY disaster. His partner of 13 years, Julianne, contacted the team to call for help.
Dean has been trying to decorate and renovate their family home for seven years but he’s still nowhere near finished. She doesn’t think he is ever going to get the job done and their three children Jack, Sophie and Harleigh are having to grow up in an unfinished building site not a home.
Dean works hard as a green-keeper and doesn’t have time to finish anything he starts. Julianne and Dean have no time to spend together and when he is home he’s trying to sort out and improve things in the house.
The couple have never had a nice bedroom during the time they have been together and this is their biggest dream – to have a sanctuary together away from the children.
Living room
This room was bland and cold. The whitewashed walls and old, tatty wood flooring left this space feeling like a shell not a home. There was very little furniture and no colour in the room and the window was exposed and open with no curtains or blinds. Derek was dying to get his hands on this space. He wanted to add colour and character and make this a place the family could sit and enjoy quality time together.
Dining room
Like the living room, this space was bare, exposed and unfinished. The room was plastered and painted white, but its function was unclear. It was without furniture and being used as a dumping ground for the kids' toys. Julianne wanted to turn this room into a dining area for the whole family to enjoy. The room had an exposed chimney breast nicknamed ‘the hole in the wall’ by Julianne and Dean because it’s been empty for so long.
Bathroom
Julianne and Dean hated their old bathroom so Derek decided this must be one of the rooms to transform in the house. The bathroom was old-fashioned with worn out carpet and a broken shower screen. The fittings themselves were in good condition but the blue painted walls and patterned tiles went out of fashion years ago. Derek wanted to update this dreary room but in a fast and relatively inexpensive way.
Main bedroom
This room was a mess before the makeover. Dean has been trying to strip the old wallpaper for years, the carpet was threadbare and there was a serious lack of storage space. Derek wanted to create a sanctuary for the couple away from the children. He opted to go for a Japanese themed room with red and black being the dominant colours.
