The ‘dating game’ isn’t always as easy, or as much fun, as it sounds.

Once someone takes your fancy, how do you let them know you’re interested? And, perhaps more importantly, how can you tell if they feel the same? You don’t want to look a fool!

We’ve compiled a list of what signals to give out and what to look out for.

Eye contact
It’s the easiest and most affective way to flirt. You know the trick: catch their eye, hold it for a few seconds, look away and repeat. To really wind them up, whisper to a friend while breaking the glance – childish, but it works. Just don’t hold the stare for too long or you'll just look weird.

Making a stand
If the eye trick works and the object of your desire comes over, look welcoming. Don’t stand with your arms crossed and your shoulders slumped or you’ll look closed off. Stand with your legs slightly apart, with your balance on both feet and turn towards them. People who stand with their legs crossed are usually shy, fact.

Fancy a drink?
Holding your drink close to your face, or bringing your elbows right into your body as you hold it, appears defensive. If a woman is flirting, she’ll hold it low and show off her chest. Are they playing with the glass? Stroking it slowly means they’re thinking about what you're saying.

Sitting comfortably?
If you decide to sit down together, check out their legs. Men swing them if they feel restless. The opposite is true for women, who subconsciously kick them while thinking about sex. Warning: If they turn their chair around and straddle it, leave. You don't want to become romantically attached to anyone who looks that stupid.

Read their lips
If the object of your desire keeps touching their lips, they’re probably thinking about sex (hopefully with you). But, if their hand is over their mouth the meaning is quite different. This indicates they’re telling lies or making a confession. They’re literally trying to stop the words coming out.

Let your hair down
A woman shows she fancies a man by playing with her hair. Apparently, it means she’s young and healthy. But, if she pulls it out from behind her ear to cover her face, back off – she’s hiding. Exposing the inside of the wrist and arms is another good sign romance is one cards as it indicates openness.
