Trinny and Susannah's guide to shopping
Trinny is a self-confessed shopaholic whereas Susannah can’t shop for much more than an hour.
Armed with this perfectly balanced perspective, the girls tackle the nation’s terrible shoppers. Take a look at their rules on how to shop successfully.
Rule one: Make a list Trinny explains: “Many people keep buying the same thing. It’s usually things they feel safest in, or for a lot of shop-a-phobes it’s accessories because they don’t know how to dress their body shape. When you make that list you’ve got to think, ‘What is it I can never find in my wardrobe that I need?’”
Rule two: Give yourself a budget Susannah says, “Give yourself a budget so you don’t over spend and make sure you stick to it.” Every year, we spend £30 billion on buying clothes – a huge amount of which is never worn. Sticking to a budget will make you think harder about your purchases. If you see something you really like, but know it’s a stretch; go back later. You may’ve changed your mind.
Rule three: No pop socks! “No pop socks,” says Susannah. “Pop socks kill any skirt or dress.” Trinny adds, “Make sure you pay attention to your appearance before you go out shopping. If you’re shopping and you look in the mirror and you don’t like how you look nothing will look nice. A tiny bit of blusher and a bit of mascara takes two minutes and it’ll make the difference.”
Rule four: Create a capsule wardrobe You don’t have to go out and buy hundreds of items to have a good wardrobe. A few simple, classic items that you can mix and match with many items is a just as good, if not better. “Create a capsule wardrobe so what you buy matches something you already have at home,” explains Susannah.
