Greatest Cities of the World: Empire State Building

Griff takes a look at one of New York's most enduring icons - the towering Empire State Building...

About the Empire State Building

Opened in 1931, the 102-storey Art Deco skyscraper is possibly the most iconic of all New York’s many iconic buildings.

At the time of it completion, it was the world’s tallest building and remained as such for the next 41 years until it was surpassed by the North Tower of the World Trade Center. After the 9/11 destruction of the WTC, the Empire State Building resumed it status as new York’s tallest.

Unfortunately, its opening coincided with the Great Depression and it was a struggle to find people to rent the space. At the time, New Yorkers dismissed it as the “Empty Space Building”.

More than 30 people have committed suicide by jumping from the top of the building. The first of these suicides happened before work had even been completed – by a construction worker who had just been made redundant.
