Martin has recently released a book on his canine passion, A Dog's Life which follows on from his recent ITV1 series, A Man and his Dogs.
“With dogs, everything is full of festivity, whether it's getting ready for a walk, being fed or greeting their owner. Who else can be relied on to be that excited about seeing you first thing, day in day out?”
During Martin's journey of dog-scovery, he was bitten on the leg by a police dog in America, and dragged through a blizzard by huskies.
He was even pulled from a snow hole by a team of rescue dogs in the Canadian Rockies, although he says that this wasn't quite as treacherous as it sounded..
"It looked pretty dramatic but I'll let you into a secret, it was a bit of a con! There I was, waiting for the dogs to rescue me. I was happily beneath the snow with a flask of whisky and an episode of Dad's Army on my phone.”
