Shaggy's career, despite being Reggae's only living certified Diamond-selling artist, has often seen him dismissed as a novelty act. In fact, Shaggy, whose real name is Orville Burrell, has unimpeachable ‘street' credentials.
He was born and raised in a rough area of Kingston in Jamaica and as a teenager moved to Brooklyn, he says, "There were a lot of influences affecting kids in the area that you might not want to be a part of - guns and drugs. I wanted to do something better.''
Despite his background, Shaggy enjoys using humour in his music, and keeps clear of aggressive and overtly lewd lyrics: "I like my music to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek. You've never seen a parental advisory sticker on my album, you can write adult content without being explicit.”
