Hats for Ascot

Ascot fashion

Today is the start of Royal Ascot week, where women from all corners of the country will descend on the race course sporting a whole array of different hats and dresses.

With so many rules on how to dress, what’s hot and appropriate?

Milliner to the Queen Rachel Trevor Morgan says, “Last year flowers were very big on hats and I think that will continue into this year. Also hats will be a lot softer; softer lines and softer colours."

Dress codes at Ascot have always been very strict. Those in general admission are told to "dress in a manner appropriate to a smart occasion. Many wear hats although this is not compulsory."

For those who are lucky enough to have tickets to the Royal Enclosure then the dress code is very stricter. Ascot says: "Her Majesty's Representative wishes to point out that only formal day dress with a hat or substantial fascinator will be acceptable. Off the shoulder, halter neck, spaghetti straps and dresses with a strap of less than one inch or mini skirts are considered unsuitable. Midriffs must be covered and trouser suits must be full length and of matching material and colour."
