Surgery under hypnosis

When Bernadine Coady, 67, was told that she needed an operation on her knee, she immediately made the decision to spurn anaesthesia in favour of self hypnosis.

After practising as a nurse for many years, Bernadine decided to train as a hypnotherapist. She says: "Although I had worked in conventional medicine all my life, I was a firm believer in complimentary therapies, particularly hypnosis. I decided to take a professional course, and it reinforced my belief that the mind was the most powerful tool anyone has at their disposal."

Having been through two previous surgical procedures without anaesthetic, Bernadine once again surrendered to the surgeon's knife with nothing more than positive visualisation to numb the pain.

Bernadine explains: "I wasn't nervous at all. I just visualised what I knew would make me feel more comfortable. I visualised ice either side of my foot, totally numbing the area.”
