Too fat to toddle

One in four pre-school children is obese and with eight out of ten obese children growing into obese adults, things need to change. Professor Paul Gately has embarked on a brand new initiative - the first ever fat camp for under fives.

The camp doesn't promote fad diets or gimmicks, just advice about eating less and exercising more. A quarter of pre-school children are obese and the worry is that once obese, they will remain so, with serious implications for their health.

Professor Gately, says: "Eight out of ten obese children will become obese adults. As well as exposing them to problems like bullying, it puts them at greater risk of premature death through conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer."

Director of Carnegie Weight Management at Leeds Metropolitan University, Prof Gately has been running successful weight loss camps in the UK for teenagers for nine years, he says: "Britain is facing an epidemic, 4.5 million children in the UK are overweight or obese, but still there is no mainstream service for weight loss in children."

For more information about the camps, log on to www.carnegieweightmanagement.com. Places may be funded on the NHS depending on the policy of your local primary care trust.
