Get the most for your money with Simon’s tips for currency conversion on holiday.
Best time to change your money
With the pound so poorly it’s essential you squeeze the best possible deal out of changing money.
Shop around, particularly online, and don’t be a “Distressed customer” buying at the airport. For almost any currency other than the euro or dollar, I always buy at the other end – particularly for Eastern European, Turkish, Egyptian, Thai and Indian currencies.
Best destination in Europe
Portugal, from which I’ve just returned. Prices seem rooted in the 1990s even for those with £s. It’s the only western European capital I know of where the standard price of a cup of coffee is 50 pence.
Best non-Euro destination
Croatia is good value for the summer, and with plenty of flights to a range of destinations you can consider putting together your own holiday to save.
Outside Europe, there are incredibly cheap holidays to Sri Lanka – as little as £400 per person including flights.
