travel insurance tips

Before you fly make sure you’re insured to avoid any problems life decides to throw at you, here are Simon’s top tips to get the best deal around.

Travel insurance advice

If you are doing adventure sports (climbing, skiing, kayaking etc) you will need to get a travel policy that covers either winter sports, adventure sports of both, as an ordinary policy will not cover these things.

Even the most basic, no frills policies will give you adequate medical cover - up to around £2 million for medical costs and £2 million public liability, which is adequate. Make sure you have cover for cancellations and curtailments, luggage and possessions possibly including lost cash, legal expenses and delay.

If you are putting the component parts of your holiday together yourself, rather than going on a package holiday, its extra important that you get insurance.

Do’s & Don’ts
Do - Tell the insurance company about any pre-existing medical conditions that you have. For example, if you've had a heart attack or cancer, and in particular, any illness which might have a long term effect on your health or illnesses which could re-occur.

If insurance companies aren't informed, then you may not be covered for any illnesses which could be related to those pre-existing problems.

Don’t - Buy an insurance policy after you've just booked a flight or a hotel with an internet company, and they offer it as an extra. It won't usually be the best value policy around, and most people don't take the time to check how good the cover is.

Get drunk, dive in the pool, break your neck and expect to be covered. Most policies won't cover you if you have been hurt whilst intoxicated and have been proved to behaving recklessly. And you can't buy a policy that covers you when you're drunk.
