Gordon Brown

The last week has been a tough one for Gordon Brown, seeing the worst local election results since 1968. With recent troubles with the economy and rising interest rates, it seems as though the Prime Minister has a lot to prove before the next general election.

Speaking on the BBC Gordon Brown admitted: "I feel responsible. There are no excuses on my part at all."

He said, however, that Labour could recover: "First of all by sorting out the immediate problem with the economy and showing people we can come through as we have in the past this very difficult economic time. Secondly by showing people that we have the vision of the future that will carry this country optimistically in my view into it's next phase."

In an attempt to woo back voters, Gordon Brown is expected to reveal a new set of initiatives.
- It is believed the Government will certainly scrap the 2p increase in fuel duty planned for September following the recent rapid increases in petrol prices.
- Gordon Brown is also expected to announce fresh help for first-time buyers trying to get a good on the property ladder.
- Fresh proposals for tackling poverty are also expected this month.
