Jasmine offers her top tips on how to make the most of a car boot sale.
Not only a fun day out with the family, car boot selling can offer a great opportunity to sell unwanted items and pick up much needed items at cheap price.
Jasmine's tips
- Keep the pricing really simple - perhaps choose three figures and label everything before you go. For example you'll have things that cost 50p, things that cost £1 and things that cost £5. It keeps it easy and straightforward for people buying
- Take a table - a decorating table is perfect. If you don't have one, or need more than one, see if you can borrow one from a friend
- Arrive early to get the best pitch - phone ahead and get the advice of the organiser
- Dealers may make you an offer early in the day - only do this if you are happy with the price they offer. Tell them to come back later - if they are serious they won't mind doing this
- Take change and refreshments - you'll need plenty of both!
- Rope in one of your boys to help - an extra pair of hands is indispensable. And it'll mean that you can take a toilet break!
The Law
In brief, as a one off, car boot sales are fine and do not need to be declared as income. However, if it becomes regular, you would be considered a 'trader'.
