This Morning - Shopping the family

Shopping the family

In November 2007 Neil Metcalfe (45) faced no other option than to call the police after finding live ammunition in his son Paul's (now 20) bedroom.

Unsurprisingly, after the police searched his room they also found an illegal firearm. Paul was arrested and later sentenced to three years imprisonment in a Young Offenders Institution.

Neil says: "I don't feel guilty about calling the police on my son and I don't regret it. I perhaps regret the way in which I did it.”

He adds, “I sometimes wish that I'd confronted him and then taken him to the station myself, so he could hand himself in, rather than having the armed police arresting him. But it didn't work out that way."

Neil and Paul’s story is followed in the Channel 4 documentary, Shopping the Family, which also features the story of Carol Saldinack who reported her son’s to the authorities after an unprovoked and vicious attack on a member of the public.
