League One Northampton claimed a famous scalp by beating top-flight Bolton in the Carling Cup.

Wanderers were one of three Barclays Premier League clubs dumped out of the second round of the competition on a night of upsets.

Adebayo Akinfenwa struck twice for Northampton to clinch a shock 2-1 victory at the Reebok Stadium.

Championship side Swansea ended newly-promoted Hull's unbeaten start to the season by clinching a richly-deserved 2-1 victory at Liberty Stadium.

Hartlepool substitutes David Foley and Richie Barker compounded West Brom's miserable start to the season by dishing out a 3-1 defeat.

But a late goal from Michael Owen gave Newcastle a deserved win in their thrilling Carling Cup tie at Coventry. The Magpies won 3-2 after extra time.

And Wigan coasted into the third round with a 4-0 win over Notts County at the JJB Stadium.

Stoke put their recent dismal Carling Cup form behind them with a 3-2 win over League One opponents Cheltenham.
