The new star of the Royal Navy's fleet of warships is being tested at sea before it goes into service in 2010.

HMS Daring will be the world's most advanced destroyer - using cutting-edge technology to protect against air attacks.

The stealth ship, the first of six destroyers ordered by the Royal Navy, has undergone several trials in the seas off Scotland's west coast.

The Type 45 Anti-Air Warfare Destroyer will provide the backbone of the Royal Navy's air defences and is due to be handed over to the Armed Forces in December this year.

The 7,350-tonne vessel has shown she can go from zero to a top speed of 31 knots in just over two minutes during her five-week trial.

Builders BAE Systems have also tested the craft's weapons capabilities as part of the second round of trials.

Daring is the first frontline warship to use all-electric propulsion and can come to a standstill from her top speed in just five-and-a-half ship lengths, BAE Systems said.
