A bulldozer has gone on the rampage in Jerusalem for the second time this month.

The driver rammed the machine into several cars in the Jewish western part of the city before police shot him dead.

At least 16 people were injured in the chaos, one seriously.

The attack occurred just down the street from the hotel where US Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama is due to stay during a visit to Israel scheduled for Wednesday.

A police spokesman said: "The bulldozer driver left a construction site, and hit two cars.

"A civilian who saw what was happening, shot him. The bulldozer continued on its way.

"A border police patrolcontinued to shoot and the terrorist was killed. Another person was wounded."

A similar attack in Jerusalem killed three Israelis on July 2. The Palestinian driver of the bulldozer involved was shot dead by an off-duty soldier and police.
