Marple: Towards Zero & Nemesis

10/07/2008

Gerladine McEwan returns in her final two outings as Miss Marple in two new films, Towards Zero and Nemesis.

In Nemesis Miss Marple is faced with her greatest challenge yet when she receives instructions from an old friend, the recently deceased Mr Rafiel, to investigate a ‘possible crime’. But there’s a catch - she has not been told what the crime is. Instead, she is booked onto a mystery coach tour to gather clues.

Miss Marple takes her nephew Raymond West to accompany her on the tour as Mr Rafiel warns that danger may threaten. It begins to dawn on them both that all the passengers have been placed there for a reason, as their lives interconnect in various ways. Even more significantly, everyone is connected to a young girl, Verity Hunt, who went missing during the war.

Towards Zero sees the formidable Lady Tressilian reluctantly hosts a house party at her Devon estate, where loyal companion Mary and old friend Treves help their wheelchair bound host entertain a glittering array of guests. Eyebrows are raised when the dashing Wimbledon tennis star Neville Strange arrives with his attractive but high maintenance new wife Kay, even though his elegant first wife Audrey is also attending.

Miss Marple, an old school friend of Lady Tressilian, is intrigued when the eccentric Treves tells a story about a child murderer who was never convicted. The next day, Treves is found dead.

Sexual tensions and marital mishaps play out as Miss Marple observes the guests as they holiday by the sea. And it’s not long before another gruesome murder takes place. Local Superintendent Mallard tries to find the killer within this tightly wound group of people and finds betrayal and revenge at the heart of it all.
