When Home Farm farrier Jonny Foster gets down on one knee and proposes to partner Paul next week, Emmerdale audiences will all be thinking the same thing.
If Paul accepts, will it be for the right reasons?
Actor Richard Grieve talked exclusively to itv.com about what spurred Jonny on to propose and what happens afterwards.
“Jonny gets a hint from someone that Paul is looking for a long-term commitment,” explained Richard. “So it’s very much a spur of the moment thing.
“I think Paul is surprised to get the proposal and Jonny is surprised he’s proposing. But Paul says yes so everyone’s happy.”
However, with Perdy Sinclair locked up in a mental hospital, it hasn’t escaped Jonny’s notice that Paul has been spending a lot of time with Perdy’s sometime gay husband Gray.
Is Jonny simply desperate to keep a tight hold on Paul?
“Unwittingly, I think it could be an act of desperation,” said Richard. “But I think if you asked Jonny, he would be adamant that that has nothing to do with it. Jonny definitely feels that Paul is the one for him.”
With their engagement confirmed, Jonny’s mum, Patricia – played by ‘Allo ‘Allo star Vicki Michelle – pays a visit to meet her future son-in-law.
“She’s a funny lady, larger than life,” said Richard. “And of course Patricia and Val make a formidable pair as mothers of the grooms!”
The big question is: will Jonny and Paul live happily ever after?
Richard said: “I’d like to think it works out beautifully, but this is Soapland, so I’m sure there’ll still be a bumpy ride.”
