Jack Sugden first appeared in Emmerdale between 1972 and 1976, played by Andrew Burt. After a break, he returned in 1979 played this time by the legendary Clive Hornby

Jack met mobile librarian, Sarah Connolly, in 1988 and the couple were married in 1994. They had a daughter, Victoria. Unfortunately, the strain of attempting to save their business took its toll and both were unfaithful

In the aftermath of the fire that killed his first wife, Sarah, Diane Blackstock provided Jack with moral support and romance gradually blossomed. Diane became Jack's third wife

Jack was Diane's rock as she underwent chemotherapy for colon cancer. She eventually came through the other side

The Dales cast and crew have just celebrated their 5000th episode - but this was taken in 1985 to mark the 1000th episode. Jack was the longest serving cast member in the show's history.
