Arsenal great Nigel Winterburn smashed in the winning penalty for England Legends to claim the Johnny Haynes Memorial Cup against Ireland Legends after a pulsating 3-3 draw at Craven Cottage.
A Lee Sharpe hat-trick was the highlight in an evenly balanced game packed with quality play while Jason McAteer (2) and Niall Quinn netted for the visitors.
An Ireland team featuring the likes of Manchester United legend Denis Irwin and Sunderland chairman Quinn had the best of the early exchanges, with David Kelly having a couple of chances and forcing a good save from England keeper Chris Woods with a header.
But England, managed by Barry Fry and marshalled by Bryan Robson in midfield, soon started to get a foothold in the game and on 25 minutes Rob Lee had a goal harshly disallowed for offside.
The home crowd didn't have to wait too long for a goal, though, as Kenny Cunningham pushed Lee Sharpe over in the penalty area and referee Dermot Gallagher pointed to the spot.
Sharpe's penalty made it 1-0 (26) but a minute later, former Liverpool winger Jason McAteer scored the goal of the night with a right-footed half-volley that flew into the top corner from the corner of the penalty area.
On 33 minutes England were ahead again after Sharpe's smart finish, before Ireland substitute Quinn scored with a trademark header on the stroke of half-time.
Quinn forced a fine save from Woods with another header early in the second half - but England were to dominate the next phase of the game, as Paul Merson twice had shots saved.
With 62 minutes on the clock it was 3-2 to England, as substitute John Salako burst down the left before sliding a cross towards goal-hungry Sharpe.
The former United man clipped a left-footed finish low into the corner.
But Ireland had other ideas, and McAteer made it 3-3 with 11 minutes left, leaving the teams to battle it out in a three-a-side penalty shoot-out.
Sharpe had a chance to win it with England's third penalty after David Kelly had missed his spot-kick, but his effort was saved by Calum O'Hanlon in the Ireland goal.
McAteer, Salako and Graeme Le Saux all netted before Eddie McGoldrick blasted his effort over the crossbar, leaving Nigel Winterburn to power home the decisive spot-kick and win the trophy for England.
