Jon Adams` brace was enough to earn AFC Telford a deserved replay as Jean-Francois Christophe spared Southend's blushes in a 2-2 draw.
Christophe - on loan from Premier League Portsmouth - smashed home from 25 yards to level in injury time.
Francis Laurent's goal gave the Shrimpers a half-time lead before Peter Clarke had a goal disallowed and a penalty saved by Ryan Young.
Adams thought he had sealed AFC Telford's passage to the second round when he fired home in the 70th and 82nd minutes, before Christophe's late heroics saved the League side.
Southend opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Laurent stroked home Christophe's throughball.
They thought they had scored again three minutes into the second half when Clarke blasted home Alex Revell's cross but it was scratched off as the ball had already gone out of play.
Young was the AFC Telford hero two minutes later when he saved Clarke's spot-kick after Anthony Grant had been pushed in the area.
And the Bucks hit back as Adams lashed home from 25 yards in the 70th minute to equalise before firing home from close range.
But Christophe's late strike sealed the draw as his effort found the net after a wicked deflection off an AFC Telford defender.
