Scunthorpe 4-0 Alfreton Town

Published: 29/11/2008

Scunthorpe eased their way into the third round of the FA Cup with a 4-0 win over non-league Alfreton.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when striker Paul Clayton was red-carded for an off-the-ball offence while Scunthorpe suffered an early blow when they lost striker Paul Hayes with a suspected fractured cheekbone.

It was his replacement, substitute Ben May, who headed the home side in front on the half-hour mark after goalkeeper Tommy Evans had failed to hold a shot from Grant McCann.

It was one-way traffic for most of the game but Scunthorpe had to wait until the 62nd minute for leading marksman Gary Hooper to make it 2-0 with his 12th goal of the season.

Hooper struck again in the 84th minute from an acute angle before midfielder Sam Togwell completed the scoring in stoppage time.

It was a disappointing result for the Blue Square north team who did not manage their first effort on goal until the closing minutes with a header from substitute Danny Davidson being easily saved by goalkeeper Joe Murphy.
