Colchester boss Paul Lambert was delighted with his side after they claimed a 2-1 success against Northampton at Sixfields.

First-half goals from Clive Platt and Paul Reid, against his former club, put Colchester in charge and, despite Danny Jackman reducing the arrears in the second half, Lambert's men held on.

The former Wycombe manager said: "Northampton is a very difficult place to come, they were excellent against Leeds in midweek and even at 2-0 up I knew it wasn't over. But we started brilliantly and were excellent in the first half."

He added: "After going 2-0 up we had a couple more chances to get more goals before the break. We've got the players here who can score the goals if we can get the right deliveries into the box.

"Northampton had a lot more of the ball in the second half and we knew it was going to be difficult but the players are putting in a big effort and we've seen it through. That's given us a bit of momentum and we've now got to keep that going."
