Louis Soares' stunning strike was enough to give Aldershot a 1-0 victory over Port Vale - their first in seven games and first clean sheet since the opening day.
The 23-year-old winger cut inside from the right and unleashed an unstoppable drive after 14 minutes while John Grant and Danny Hylton wasted good chances.
After shipping eight goals in their two previous outings, Aldershot, back on home soil, flew out of the blocks with top scorer Scott Davies hitting the crossbar after seven minutes.
But the Shots made their early pressure count when Soares found space on the edge of the box and rifled the ball home.
The visitors, fresh from two consecutive away victories, came back at Aldershot and Luke Rodgers looked certain to equalise on half-time but for a desperate goal-line clearance from Davies.
Grant wasted a glorious opportunity to double the hosts' advantage on the hour, ballooning his volley over, and Hylton went close from a tight angle before Town goalkeeper Nikki Bull dived low to his right to deny Vale substitute Ross Davidson at the death.
