Rotherham 0-1 Darlington

Published: Tuesday, 28 October 2008, 12:00AM

Rotherham slumped to a second successive home defeat as they failed to find a way through Darlington's mean defence as the Quakers ground out a 1-0 win.

Rotherham just about shaded a goalless first half in which defences were always on top.

However, it was the visitors who came closest to a goal when Liam Hatch thumped a piledriver of a shot against the upright after 38 minutes.

Ten minutes earlier, Neil Austin's free kick from the edge of the area whistled just over the bar.

Rotherham were brightest early on and Mark Burchill shot just wide after nine minutes, before Dale Tonge skied a shot over the bar and Micky Cummins saw his effort saved by Simon Brown.

Darlington finally broke the deadlock after 62 minutes when Rotherham squandered several chances to clear the danger and Ricky Ravenhill capitalised to prod the ball home from six yards out.

The home side tried to turn up the heat and Darlington had Austin to thank for a great block on the line from substitute Mark Hudson's shot, but they were quick to pull everyone back at every hint of danger and they held out for a deserved victory.
