Club profile
One of the great pleasures in coaching is the ability to mould young talent into a winning unit, something Austin hopes he can pull off when he drops in on the club where he played his first rugby: Birkenhead Park Junior Colts.
Having staged numerous high profile games, including the All Blacks four times and England v Wales back in 1894, the Wirral club has a rich history but have since fallen on harder times. However they are now planning for the future, by immersing themselves fully in the community and offering the opportunity to play rugby to kids who have never considered the sport before.
With promotion very much on the cards, former Colt Austin will look to work on the basics of their game to help keep them flying high in the Halbro NW Junior Colts League E and he’ll be keen to enlist more local youngsters in his drive up the table.
Coach Phil Reynolds is doing an admirable job of things with his group of players, that are "keen as mustard", his own passion fuelled by the knowledge that the game helped him out as a youngster.
However, when a wise former pro like Austin offers to lend a hand, it can only help matters with base fitness and attitude adjustments also on the agenda in the coming weeks.
