Danny's Diary: Rehab on track

Published: Wednesday, 11 February 2009, 4:10PM

My rehabilitation is coming on really well, and the ankle I injured last week after training is feeling better every day.

I've been staying with the England camp for the past few days, keeping involved by going to the team meetings but also cracking on with my rehab.

I did a bit of a weird session in the pool yesterday in a big flotation suit, doing lengths, which was very tough. The rehab is all about keeping myself fit without putting any kind of pressure through the ankle.

I'm walking now and soon I will be able to start a bit of light jogging, and then I’ll be training properly sooner rather than later.

I was at home with my feet up watching the Italy game against Italy on Saturday, and as a scrum-half, I did feel for Mauro Bergamasco when he cost his team a couple of tries.

He didn't look comfortable and if anything I think he was trying a bit too hard, and that ended up making him worse.

It was a strange decision by the Italy coach Nick Mallett to play a flanker at No 9 - the lad who came on looked like a perfectly good scrum-half and I don't know why they didn't start with him.

Put it this way - I think it will be a long time before we see another experiment like that, and of course it just goes to show how precious us scrum-halves really are!!

From a personal point of view, I'll admit I don't want Harry Ellis to do that well while I'm injured!  Harry had a good game at Twickenham and got a couple of tries - but my aim has to be that Johnno will still see me as the first-choice scrum-half when I'm back and fit.

I haven't spoken to Johnno about it at all yet, but all I can do is focus on getting myself ready in time for the Ireland game.

The England lads are going to head off to Wales on Thursday and then I'll go back and do a couple of days rehab with Harlequins.

On which note, it's going to be a massive couple of weeks for the club. We've got London Irish this weekend, who are second at the moment, and then leaders Gloucester the following week.

I was talking to my flatmate Jordan Turner-Hall and he assured me that everyone is absolutely desperate to get out there to take on Irish and get Quins moving back up the Guinness Premiership table.

We're ten points behind Gloucester at the moment - but only four behind Bath in fourth place - so we're not in a bad position. A bit like my Championship Manager team.

I've taken a bit of stick of lately for a photoshoot I did for Cosmopolitan. Admittedly I am not wearing many clothes, but I have been telling everyone that it's all for a good cause.

If anyone is interested in doing a calendar for 2010 then get in touch!

Cheers, DC
