Danny's Diary: Gunning for the title

Published: Thursday, 23 April 2009, 3:00PM

It promises to be an exciting end to the Guinness Premiership season this weekend, with six teams still in with a shout of the play-offs.

We're just looking for the win against Newcastle at the Stoop to make sure we make the top four. We haven't talked about trying to go for a bonus point which would guarantee a home semi-final. But if that comes against Newcastle, well, that would be what you might call a bonus.

Newcastle played really well last month when they beat us and we're coming off the back of two defeats, so we are more determined than ever to get a result on Saturday.

It would be a great achievement for the club to get into that top four and have a chance of winning the title. We just missed out last year and we can't afford to make the same mistake.

Newcastle are one of the form teams in the Premiership so there's no doubt it will be a tough game - with them in such great form and us needing the win for a play-off spot, it should be an absolute cracker.

Myself and Jordan Turner-Hall have both been nominated for the Young Player of the Year and being my flatmate, that could cause a few problems! He's been the best 12 in the Premiership this year and if he keeps playing the way he is, I hope it won't be too long before we're playing for England together.

I was really disappointed not to make the Lions squad in the announcement on Tuesday - but I'll hopefully go to Argentina with England so there are things to look forward to this summer. On the other hand, I was genuinely delighted for my Quins team-mate Ugo Monye who did get the nod.

We were just about to head out for training at lunchtime on Tuesday, and Skins (Quins captain Will Skinner) said "Let's just watch this before we go out ..." Some of the lads were outside and some were in watching the TV, and when we heard Ugo's name there was a massive cheer.

Not hearing my name read out was a bit hard - I thought I'd be able to bring something a bit different to the squad as a scrum-half, and I just have to dig in now for Quins now. They've picked three great scrum-halves in Mike Phillips, Harry Ellis and Tomas O'Leary. I hope I'll get another crack at it another time.

I haven't had a proper look at the squad ... once I didn't hear my name in it I wasn't all that bothered to be honest! The focus is all on Newcastle's visit on Saturday - and it's the biggest game of our season now.

Cheers,
DC
