Alan's top tips

Bay Tree

  • Potted Bay Trees should be hardy enough to outstand the winter - unless really severe.
  • If your worried, you might want to protect the stems with fleece or lagging.
  • If they do get damaged, you should be able to simply trim them down and they should grow back again nicely.

Growing supermarket herbs

  • They usually won't last long in a pot as they're actually lots of individual plants - rather than just one!
  • Ensure the soil is moist and separate out just a few to plant. Now they should have enough room to grow.
  • Just make sure you water them really well.

Cress seeds

  • You can plant cress any time of year.
  • You don't even need soil - damp kitchen towels will do.
  • Just tap the side of your hand and work around the outside of your pot first to ensure they're spread evenly.
