COUNCIL STAFF STRIKE OVER NEW CONTRACTS
Hundreds of Birmingham City Council staff are striking today over new working contracts. The union Unison says the new contracts remove pay enhancements. But despite the strike the council says most of its services are operational.
CLEGG EXPECTED TO ANNOUNCE £50M SUMMER SCHOOL SCHEME
It's the fifth and final day of the Liberal Democrat Conference being held in Birmingham. It will be closed this afternoon with a key note speech from the Deputy Prime Minister. Nick Clegg is expected to unveil a £50 million scheme offering summer schools to poorer children. In response to the riots he will say that as many as 100,000 children will be offered a chance to attend a two-week summer school to keep them "on the right path."
SPORTS RETAILER LOSES £700K IN RIOTS
Rretailer JD Sports has revealed that £700,000 worth of stock was looted in last month's riots. A total of 16 stores, including those in Nottingham and Birmingham, were hit by the disorder. However the chain said that like-for-like sales excluding VAT increased by 1.6 per cent.
TERROR SUSPECTS REMAIN IN CUSTODY
Six men who were arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of terrorism offences remain in custody after police were given more time to question them. It follows a joint investigation by the police and MI5. A 22 year old woman who was arrested on suspicion of failing to disclose information has been released on police bail.
COUNCIL INJECTS £1.5M INTO JOBS FUND
Nottingham City Council is investing £1.5 million in a new scheme to provide job placements for young adults who are struggling to find work. The Nottingham Jobs Fund will also create 240 jobs over three years.
TAMING OF THE SHREWS - CARLING CUP RESULTS
Football, and last night Shrewsbury Town lost 3-1 away to Arsenal, despite taking an early lead. Aston Villa suffered a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Bolton Wanderers. Nottingham Forest lost 3-4 to Newcastle. Stoke City won their clash against Tottenham Hotspur 7-6 on penalties. And Wolves won 5-0 at home to Millwall.
