Natalie Gumede lets on what 'damaged' Kirsty is thinking as her violence towards Tyrone escalates.

Is Kirsty in shock at her own actions right now?
Up to now it has been a red mist and Kirsty has been very taken aback by her own
behaviour. This time I feel like we are taking a step up in the level of violence and the story has driven on. We have gone to a place now where, she knows it’s wrong but
she is finding a way to justify it. After the next fight I think she is initially shocked, which is why she runs out of the room as soon as she has attacked Tyrone. However, I don’t think that there is the same level of shock or horror anymore because she knows herself now and she can see that she is scaring him. Kirsty is actually scaring herself now but she allows her frustration to run away with her. Now she essentially finds something to hit him with so we are not in the same realm anymore.

How would she feel if she knew Tyrone had told Tina?
Devastated, furious, raging.

What is her reaction when Tyrone asks her to get help for her anger issues?
She knows she has to do something so she’s not going to argue because she
wants to save her relationship with Tyrone. I think it is probably something that had
already crossed her mind but she’s not very brave in that sense. The idea of actually
talking to somebody about it is terrifying her because she has to admit her problems.

What makes Kirsty decide to leave Tyrone?
I think that when she does have moments of clarity and when the drama has died down she does realise that she is making this person very unhappy. She can see the manipulation and that she is destroying the person that she loves, she doesn’t actually like that about herself. She knows that all she is going to do is ruin him and as much as she knows how much Tyrone loves and wants this baby she knows she needs to get
away for a while. She says later on that she knows herself very well now but there is
less time where she is self aware, those periods of clarity are becoming smaller and
smaller.

What advice would you give Kirsty if she was your friends?
She would never be my friend. If you had a colleague who was like that and you
didn’t know much about her, she would probably be someone that I would find quite
exhausting and dominating. I wouldn’t know what was going on behind closed doors
but if I knew anyone like that I would remove myself from that situation, it would be very difficult to give her advice but she needs help and intervention.

What kind of feedback are you getting on this storyline now?
So far, it has been surprisingly understanding. I am interested to see what
happens when this next section is screened because it is a step up in the violence
and she is moving ever further away from redemption. I think that it is a very serious storyline and perhaps people are a little bit intimidated by me. I did start off as a panto baddy but now it is so much worse than that and there’s an eerie quiet. Over twitter people have been very supportive as they are looking at it intelligently.

Is Kirsty evil or damaged?
Damaged, she is verging on evil now but it is because she is damaged.
