Coronation Street Set To Open For Public Tours

The Coronation Street external sets at MediaCityUK in Manchester will open to the general public later this month.

Continuum Attractions, working in partnership with ITV and the team at Coronation Street, will give fans access to the external sets, including the famous cobbled street, Rosamund Street and the brand new extended Victoria Street.

Coronation Street will open it's doors on select weekends until the end of the year.*

The tours will last approximately 1.5 hours and be full of filming stories and secrets and packed with picture opportunities.

Juliana Delaney, CEO of Continuum Attractions said:

“It is with great pride we announce our operation of guided tours round the Coronation Street external sets at MediaCityUK from later this month.

"The show has such an extraordinary connection with their fans all across the world, we’re delighted some will be lucky enough to now follow in the footsteps of their favourite characters and walk down those famous cobbles."

John Whiston, MD Continuing Drama & Head of ITV in the North added:

“Turning the corner and stepping out on to the most famous TV street in the world never gets old, even after working here as long as I have. I still get such a massive thrill.

"To be able to now share Coronation Street with the most important people on the show – our audience – is very exciting and I hope they soak it all in and enjoy it as much as we do."

Aidan's Exit

Coronation Street is to highlight the important issue of male suicide when Aidan Connor tragically takes his own life.

In episodes to be screened the week of May 7th viewers will hear that Johnny Connor has discovered his son’s body at his Victoria Street flat, after Aidan failed to turn up for work at the factory.

As the news of what Aidan has done spreads, his devastated family and friends try to come to terms with the shock of their loss and begin to question why they hadn’t spotted any signs that he was struggling to cope with life.

Viewers will last see Aidan on screen on Monday 7th May when he goes to see Eva at the cottage where she is living after giving birth to baby Susie, before returning to a family party at the Rovers. His final scene will see him back at his flat alone. No element of the suicide will be shown on screen.

Johnny makes the devastating discovery at the beginning of an hour long episode on May 9th.

Actor Shayne Ward, the writers and production team, have worked closely with charities Samaritans and CALM to ensure the storyline is handled sensitively and realistically.

Shayne Ward said:

“I am honoured to have been trusted with a storyline like this, it shows the confidence that Kate and the team had in me to be able to play it. When you get given a storyline like this it is a decision that is not taken lightly, I have played it with as much honesty and truth as I could. I am very proud of what I have done in my three years on the show and on this storyline in particular.

“Aidan is an ‘everyman’ figure, he is someone men can identify with, which is important in telling this story."

We hope that anyone who recognises something of themselves in Aidan, will realise they can, and really should, talk about how they’re feeling.

Coronation Street Appoints New Producer

ITV today confirmed Iain MacLeod has been appointed as the new Producer of Coronation Street, following Kate Oates’ decision to leave the soap and move into drama series production.

Kate is moving to work with ITV Studios owned label Tall Story Pictures, where she will produce the forthcoming second series of Bancroft, starring Sarah Parish.

Kate and Iain leave their respective soaps in strong form, as each is up +5% year-on-year for volume, on both consolidated and overnights ratings.

In 2018 to date, Emmerdale has increased its average audience in the consolidated ratings, pulling ahead to become the UK’s second most popular soap.

The Emmerdale appointments will take effect from the beginning of June, to coincide with Iain taking the helm at Coronation Street.

9.4M viewers tuned in to see Eileen confront Phelan
