No one expected Matt and Shayne to be battling it out in the Save Me Skate, but it meant one of this year's favourites was certainly going home in Week 5 just halfway through the competition. And, after a close-cut Save Me Skate, it was the X Factor singing sensation that found himself on his way home tonight.
"I'm devastated to be here," Shayne told Christine as the voting results were read out, leaving him and partner Maria in the bottom two along with Matt and Brianne, and causing host Phillip Schofield to admit, "These are two names i didn't think I'd be reading out at this stage of the competition."
"I'm gutted to be up against someone so great, but I'm going to give it my all," Shayne continued, before performing to The Temper Trap's Sweet Disposition. But a step-perfect routine - and a stumble by rival Matt in his own Save Me Skate - weren't enough to keep him here for another week on the ice, and three of the four judges chose to save the former Eastenders actor.
"Anyone who goes up against Matt... well, he's always going to come out on top!" laughed Shayne as he took his elimination on the chin, telling his DOI pals, "Thank you all, you've been an amazing bunch."
