On 14th March thousands crowded in St. Peter's Square outside the holy Sistine Chapel to find out who was to be elected the new Pope.

After hours of waiting in the rain, white smoke finally billowed from the chimney of the chapel, signalling that the cardinals had chosen their new Pope.

Argentinian Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio (now known as Pope Francis) was elected and is the first ever Pope from Latin America and the first from outside Europe in over a millennium.

On 19th March Pope Francis will be installed during a papal inauguration ceremony at St. Peters Square.
